Mary Hunter 1884 - A Sampler Primer / Elegant Thread, The

Throughout history samplers were used as a learning tool for young girls at day and boarding schools. Early samplers were long and narrow. The stitched patterns were worked in crosswise bands and intended to be kept in a workbasket as a pattern reference when a decorative stitch or lettering was needed for household marking. This type of work, referred to as a band sampler, was made throughout England, Europe and the American Colonies. Mary Hunter 1884 is a sweet rendition of an early marking sampler with alternating bands of alphabets and patterns.

The model was stitched on 32 count “Amsterdam Blue” Belfast Linen using two strands of DMC Blanc over two linen threads. This would also be lovely using DMC #12 Pearl Cotton. Stitches included in this chart are cross stitch, satin stitch, and back stitch.
